Selección Privada 2010
Selección Privada

The handpicked and carefully selected grapes in boxes of 15 kg come from our 3 single vineyard plots: "El Consul”, “La Misela” and “Terrazas”.
Marqués de Vargas subscribes to the environmentally friendly concept and practice of sustainable winegrowing. Herbicides and pesticides are not used in our vineyards.

The wine is made traditionally according to the old-world
methods side by side with the latest technology. The wine is bottled without any fining or filtering, resulting in an unprocessed and fully natural wine.

Tasting Note
  • Winemaker: Ana Barrón
  • Vineyard: "El Cónsul” (7 ha), “La Misela” (3 ha), “Terrazas” (7 ha) with the average age of bush vines of 44 years and free draining, poor, shallow and infertile calcareous –clay soils sufficiently high in organic matter and adequate nutrient holding capacity.
  • Varietals: Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha
  • Winemaking: Classic with destemming, each parcel is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks (10,000 Kg) for 11 days at controlled temperatures at 30ºC. Daily remontage and pumping over to obtain the desired balance of fruit and tannin extraction, the wine rests 14 days in skin contact after fermentation. The malolactic fermentation takes then partly place in new oak barrels.
  • Ageing: 18 months in new French oak barrels. Reserva. Regular racking every 4 months at the beginning, then every 6 months
  • Alcohol content: 14%
  • Total acidity: 5.85 gr/l tartaric

  • PH: 3.56
  • Residual sugar: 1.82 gr/l
  • Closure: Natural top quality cork of 49x24
  • Tasting notes: A deep ruby color with clean and perfectly balanced aromas. The wood is well integrated showing the potential of this vintage year, underlining ripe notes of red and black fruit. On the palate, elegant and fine, showing its tannic potential without lacking acidity. Pronounced and pleasant, with great ageing potential.
  • Serving suggestions: Temperature 17-18ºC and decanting before serving is highly recommended
  • Food matching: Acorn-fed Iberico ham, Roasts, game and other well-flavoured dishes and mature riche cheeses.

Tasting Note

  • Harvest date: From 10th to 15th October 2009
  • Vineyard :"El Cónsul” (7 ha), “La Misela” (3 ha), “Terrazas” (7 ha) with the average age of bush vines of 43 years and free draining, poor, shallow and infertile calcareous – clay soils sufficiently high in organic matter and adequate nutrient holding capacity
  • Varietals: Tempranillo (70%), Mazuelo (5%), Garnacha (5%) & Others (20%)
  • Winemaking: Classic with destemming, each parcel is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks (10,000 Kg) for 11 days at controlled temperatures at 30ºC. • Ageing: 21 months in new Russian oak barrels. Regular racking every 4 months at the beginning, then every 6 months
  • Bottled: February 2012
  • Alcohol content: 14%
  • Total acidity: 5.95 gr/l tartaric

  • PH: 3.40
  • Residual sugar: 1.90 gr/l
  • Closure: Natural top quality cork of 49x24
  • Vintage 2009 report: This vintage was rated as “very good” by the Rioja Control Board. The vegetative growth cycle of our vines showed an optimal development with excellent health conditions and an outstanding sanitary state. Autumn and Winter were rainy with higher than average rainfall from November to February. They were followed by a very hot and dry Summer. Harvest date was key for quality fruit in 2009 vintage due to the rain all through the D.O. in mid-September (16th-18th). During the second half of September, the weather conditions were excellent and consistent throughout the end of the harvest, enjoying perfect sunny days that allowed optimal fruit ripening and healthy grapes.
  • Tasting notes: Clear, deep ruby color with violet rims. Clean and pronounced on the nose, with complex aromas. Rich and elegant fragrance of black fruit notes mingled with subtle chocolate nuances and fresh herbal hints of mint and balsamic. On the palate, very well integrated acidity and tannins from the two years in new Russian oak barrels. Sophisticated wide range of ripe fruit flavours of pronounced intensity and a long finish, with good potential for ageing.
  • Serving suggestions: Temperature 17-18ºC and decanting before serving is highly recommended
  • Food matching: Roasts, games, stews, red meats like steak, grilled meats with roast potatoes or ham
